Eligibility and Selection Procedures
Summary:
Qualifications and Considerations:
The Ephebian Society is a civic betterment and service organization whose membership is composed of citizens who are graduated from the Los Angeles area high schools and selected for membership in the society by the faculties and senior classes of their high schools. They are selected on the basis of outstanding character, leadership, demonstrated service, and high scholastic achievement, which is defined by the Society as a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (4.0 max scale).
Selection of Ephebians:
The selection process of Ephebian candidates will vary from school to school. Final determinations are made by the high school Ephebian Sponsor. Some guidelines are given below.
The number of membership positions available will be 2.5 % (1 in every 40) of the graduating seniors. There are three voting units: the Senior Students, the Faculty at large, and a Committee made up of school sponsors (teachers actively sponsoring student organizations).
Each member of the three units will vote for a maximum of 3 eligible individuals on the ballot (minimim GPA 3.3). There will follow a ranking: #1 for the most votes to be followed by #2 with the next most votes, and so on. Students receiving "0" votes will merit a unit rank of one beyond the highest number of the last student with "one or more" votes or, a unit rank of one beyond the total number of membership positions available - whichever is highest.
After each unit has ranked the candidates, it will be left to the Ephebian Sponsor to add the unit rankings to a sub-total. The sub-total unit rankings will then be ranked (with the least total being placed first ) to achieve a final rank. The available positions shall be filled with the use of this final rank.
Those elected are then issued membership forms to complete and sign. The membership forms are to be returned to the Ephebian Society by the deadline.

Alternate Method of Selection:
Provided there is sufficient time, some schools prefer a selection process that gives the reviewer the opportunity to see what type of volunteer activities the applicant has participated in. The Ephebian Sponsor may use one or more of the following alternate selection methods:
Applicant will
1) Write a two page essay on one of the following topics:
- What does the Ephebic Oath mean to you?
- Why should the reviewing panel select you as an Ephebian?
- What volunteer or leadership activities have you participated in and how has it impacted your community?
OR
2) In the presence of faculty/Ephebian selection staff, give a 5 minute oral statement about what it means to be an Ephebian. Be prepared to answer questions from the reviewing panel.
OR
3) Complete an application and submit to the Ephebian Sponsor (Sample Application). This application can also vary from school to school. You can modify the one provided as needed.
The number of membership positions available is 2.5 % (1 in every 40) of the graduating seniors. The Ephebian Sponsor has the discretion to go beyond this number if ties occur and the Sponsor believes all tying candidates deserve to be selected.
Dispute Resolution
The Ephebian Sponsor is the authorized person who assures that the voting process or selection process is completed fairly and accurately. If an applicant is disqualified or not selected and wishes to dispute the results, the applicant must first appeal to the Ephebian Sponsor. If the reply is not satisfactory, the applicant may then appeal to the school principal. If the applicant is still not satisfied with the response, the applicant may notify the president of the Ephebian Society. The Society recommends that all appeals be made in writing to avoid any confusion.
